So I went home to Houston this weekend and my mom bought me this coat.
Now apparently, this coat is no ordinary coat. Apparently this coat is a big deal. Because it was on Oprah. I didn't buy the coat because it was on Oprah; I didn't know it had been on Oprah!
My mom and I were at Steve and Berry's Saturday afternoon and while she was checking out, there was a guy behind the counter who told us that we should wait for a moment as he opened the next box. In it was the coat. I gushed and my mom caved and spent the large sum of 20 dollars.
Amazing!
There were 6 more sold as we were checking out, each woman gasping about how she'd seen it in a magazine or on Oprah.
Anyway, I was doing a little research on the coat (because of the huge deal everyone had made as my mom was purchasing it), and I found a very interesting article about Sarah Jessica Parker (the coat is from her clothing line "Bitten").
In it she talks about how the concept of a clothing line came to be and how designers (like Vera Wang) are irritated by the fact that so many actors are becoming clothing designers (think JLo and Reba) and then she says this (about Vera Wang):
"I understand the culture of her business has changed radically, not unlike my primary business where everybody and his mother, with little or no training, wants to be in acting."
And a lightbulb went on in my head. YES! Why is it that everyone I meet, when I tell them that I have a degree in theatre has to tell me about how they were the third cow on the left in Oklahoma when they were 14 and how they understand the art and want to know what I think about High School Musical and isn't it the Grease of this upcoming generation.
So I sympathize with Vera. And I'll think about it every time I put my coat on.
But that won't change the fact that I will put the coat on every chance I get.
Is that bad and/or hypocritical?
