Star Wars Episode VII 1/2: The Pheromones Strike Back

Admitting that I enjoy Star Wars has NEVER served me well. I must remember that Star Wars section of Half-Price Books=Me getting hit on by 30 year old guy still living with his mom.

So I haven't been feeling very well. I had already had an awkward encounter with our IT guy this morning and I was out shopping for sweat pants this afternoon, when I decided to stop in to Half-Price to do a little browsing. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, just wanted a little pick-me-up because I hadn't been feeling well. So I browsed the novels (looking for a light chick-flick book) and the travel section (looking for In a Sunburned Country) and didn't find anything that tickled my fancy. So I wandered (as I am known to do) over to the Star Wars section.

First off, let me tell you that I used to own just about every Star Wars book ever written. I'm not even kidding. I had over a hundred (wow, how embarassing). But last year, I decided that I didn't really need them and I needed to just get rid of them. So I did. I actually took them to Half-Price. It still kind of makes me sad. I still have a couple on my bookshelf, but only because they were in a box in my Mimi's attic that I had forgotten about.

So, I had been itching to go back to my late elementary years and my early junior high years, so I picked up The Truce at Bakura. Which is a lovely little book that I read in 5th grade and continued to love and reread through high school. I'm standing there debating whether or not to buy it (it was only $3!) or The Courtship of Princess Leia when a rather nerdy looking guy comes over and stands directly in front of me. Completely ignoring the fact that I am currently looking at the books in front of him. And from there our conversation goes like this:

Me- Excuse me.
Nerd- Oh, blast! Was I in front of you?
Me- Yes.
Nerd- I'm deeply sorry.
(looks at me as he moves over)
Nerd- So... you like Star Wars?
Me- Yes.
Nerd- Wow... and you even read the books? Wicked.
Me- Uh, huh...

And that was when, I made the rash decision to just buy the book that was farther away from his arm... which happened to be The Truce at Bakura and book it to the cash registers.

And I hand the guy the book, and he asks, "wow, you read Star Wars books?" a little too inquisitively. I nodded, took my receipt and ran out of Half-Price, my ego dragging behind me.

And this isn't the first time, lest we forget the ever wonderful Jedi hitting on me at the Halloween Party. But my favorite is the time I got hit on playing poker with the college group at Bammel.

There was a new guy to our group. I think his name was John. JW and Leigh Ann would probably remember better than I would, but John was a 26/27 year old Game Stop employee. He had come in and had eaten a hamburger which he promptly had gotten all over his t-shirt covered, protruding stomach and in his goatee and mustache. He had watched us play poker and then joined in and someone had asked something about Star Wars, and I gave a pretty quick and flippant answer. John looked at me surprised and asked, "do you like Star Wars?"

And JW quickly said "oh yeah, she LOVES Star Wars."

John looked at me for affirmation and I said offhandedly as I could "Yes, I could probably give you a run for your money."

John looked at me, his eyes a little glazed and said, "I don't mean to sound too forward, but are you seeing someone?"

To which I replied, "Um... no, but I uh... don't think. I don't really want..."

Leigh Ann and JW both agree that I was VERY clear that I was not at all interested in him being the solution to my "singleness."

Everyone stay tuned, Episode VII 3/4ths is coming soon... Return of the Pheromones.

My one brush with ultra-nerdom was when I was purchasing some HP items at BAM the weekend of the last book release. The guy that checked me out was the brother of whoever you were just talking about, and he engaged me in a conversation about the book release that I MUCH would have preferred to have had with the hot guy working the other check-out. *sigh*

Keep the stories coming; they're so funny!
